Valley Hatchery’s Barnevelder Chicks: A Blend of Beauty and Practicality
Valley Hatchery offers the charming Barnevelder, or ‘Barnies’, originally from Barneveld, Holland. This breed, recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1991, is celebrated for its stunning double laced feather pattern of reddish-brown and blueish-black, although some chicks may exhibit single lacing. These patterns are a distinct feature that often draws compliments.
Sassy, fun, and low-maintenance, the Barnevelder is an excellent choice for backyard chicken keeping. With a calm demeanor, they may seem a bit lazy compared to more active breeds, necessitating a watchful eye on their diet. Their egg-laying prowess is comparable to the Welsummer, producing 150 to 200 large, rich chocolate-colored eggs per year. Adult Barnevelder roosters and hens reach weights of about 7 and 6 pounds, respectively. As an APA-recognized breed in the Continental Class, these birds live an average of 7 years or more.
Valley Hatchery is committed to the health and vitality of every chick, ensuring each one arrives alive and thrives in your care. With our Barnevelders, you get more than just poultry; you get a blend of elegance, personality, and egg-laying efficiency for your flock.
