Valley Hatchery is proud to offer the exquisite Cuckoo Maran Chickens, a breed steeped in history and renowned for its unique characteristics. Originating in Marans, France in the mid-1800s, this breed, although rare, has gained significant popularity in the U.S. for its gentle temperament and impressive egg-laying abilities. Cuckoo Marans are characterized by their remarkable feathering, which displays a striking marbled pattern reminiscent of a Barred Plymouth Rock, with the females showcasing darker hues than the males.
These robust birds are known for their fast growth and friendly nature, making them excellent choices for both farm and backyard settings. While they thrive in free-range environments, they are less ideal for families with small children, as they generally prefer not to be handled. The hens of this breed are prolific layers, producing upwards of 180 large eggs annually. These eggs are a visual delight, featuring a deep brown color, sometimes speckled, and ranging from shades three to six on the Marans egg color chart.
Regarding physical attributes, the Cuckoo Marans roosters and hens reach an average weight of about 9 pounds and 7 pounds respectively when fully grown. Although this breed is not officially recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA), it is cherished for its distinctive qualities and longevity, with an average lifespan of around 8 years.
