This hybrid breed, resulting from a cross between a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen, offers the unique feature of being color sexable from a young age. The roosters display faded barred patterns with light-colored neck hackle feathers, while the hens boast a beautiful black plumage with red accents in their neck hackle feathers.

Black Sex Link Chickens are dynamic and active, thriving in free-range environments where they can forage to their heart’s content. They are not bred for shows but for functionality and companionship, making them an ideal choice for families and backyard chicken enthusiasts. These chickens are notably friendly and docile, making them great backyard pets that the whole family can enjoy.

The egg-laying capabilities of Black Sex Link hens are impressive, producing 200 to 280 large light brown eggs annually. They are known for their vigorous nature and are excellent layers of rugged brown eggs. The males and females reach average weights of about 8.5 and 6.5 pounds, respectively. It’s important to note that while the hens are friendly, Black Sex Link roosters can be more aggressive and territorial, making them less suitable around children or other pets.

Despite not being recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA), these chickens are valued for their hardiness and egg production. However, their lifespan tends to be shorter than some other breeds, typically living 2 to 3 years due to their fast maturing nature.
