Valley Hatchery proudly offers the mystical Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Chicks, a breed steeped in history and bursting with color. Originating in New York in the late 19th century, the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, first appearing in 1929, is a testament to the breed’s evolving beauty. Among the 18 different colorations of the Wyandotte breed, this variety stands out for its popularity and enchanting appearance.
The Blue Laced Red Wyandotte is celebrated for its unique feather coloring. While the body feathers exhibit a rich red-brown hue, they are spectacularly complemented by gray-blue lacing throughout the wings and body. However, it’s important to note that, like other blue breeds, the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte does not breed true to a single shade of blue. The lacing color can vary significantly, ranging from very light to a deep blue-black, adding to the uniqueness of each bird.
In addition to their striking appearance, these chickens are known for their friendly personalities, making them perfect family birds. They are particularly suited to colder climates, though they may not fare as well in hotter conditions. The hens are prolific layers, providing approximately 180 to 260 medium brown eggs per year. When it comes to size, the roosters average 8.5 pounds, and the hens around 6.5 pounds at full maturity. Although not recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA), these birds can live up to 12 years with proper care, averaging a lifespan of 6 to 12 years.
