Valley Hatchery is proud to offer Blue Slate turkeys, a rare and heritage breed recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Thought to be descended from the Spanish Black turkey and the Norfolk Black of England, Blue Slate turkeys are known for their excellent foraging abilities and adaptability to both backyard and farm environments. They are also capable of reproducing naturally and may go broody. The Blue Slate offspring hatch in three different color patterns: blue splash, blue, and black.
In addition to being used for exhibition, Blue Slate turkeys are also prized for their meat and egg production. Toms generally weigh 23lbs and hens 14lbs, and while they lay relatively few eggs per year, they tend to be large to extra-large and off-white in color. Originally from North America, Blue Slate turkeys are recognized by the APA. Keep in mind that these birds can be prone to going broody. At Valley Hatchery, we are committed to providing high-quality Blue Slate turkeys that are perfect for a variety of purposes.
