Valley Hatchery is proud to offer Welsh Harlequin Ducklings, the only truly Welsh breed of duck. This light-weight breed is known for its striking plumage and excellent egg-laying ability, with females producing 100-150 large white eggs per year. The Welsh Harlequin is primarily used for egg production and exhibition, and is recognized by the American Poultry Association.
Originally from Wales, the Welsh Harlequin has a unique appearance. The females have a black bill and brown legs and feet, and their plumage is similar to that of a mallard but heavily frosted with white. They also lack the eye stripes of mallard females. The males, or drakes, are also similar to a heavily frosted mallard, with a yellow-green bill and orange legs and feet. There is also a color variation known as “golden,” which is popular in the UK and replaces the black feather pigments with a light golden brown color.
In addition to their striking appearance, Welsh Harlequin Ducks are known for their calm demeanor and are popular as backyard pets. They are active foragers and produce a lean carcass, although their light coloration can make them more vulnerable to predators such as birds of prey. The breed is also prone to broodiness and is capable of producing young without human intervention. Overall, Welsh Harlequin Ducks are a docile and reliable choice for egg production and exhibition. Male Welsh Harlequins typically weigh 5.5lbs, while females weigh around 4.5lbs.
