Description
Valley Hatchery is excited to introduce the Super African Goslings, a robust and impressive breed with a deep historical lineage tracing back to China. Our Super African is a true replica of the Lion Head goose of China, and it’s fascinating to note that this breed has undergone little change over the past 150 years. Recognized for its large size and well-developed dewlap, the Super African Gosling is a standout in both appearance and utility.
Contrary to some beliefs, the dewlap characteristic of this breed is not a result of crossbreeding with the Dewlap Toulouse. In fact, large dewlapped African geese were present in Europe fifty years before the Dewlap Toulouse was developed. The Super African is larger than its standard African counterpart, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a guard goose. These geese are more vocal and significantly larger, serving as effective alarms on the farm.
The Super African has a striking appearance, with dark brown feathering over its head and back, gradually fading to gray on the undercarriage. Their bill is black, and their feet are a vibrant orange. Due to their larger size, Super Africans may have lower fertility rates and are not prolific layers, but they can lay up to 20-30 white eggs each year. Despite their below-average laying capacity, they are known for their strength and longevity.
Male Super African Geese, or Ganders, average around 22 pounds, while the females weigh about 18 pounds. They have a dual purpose, excelling in guarding as well as other farm roles. Their personality is a blend of being docile yet active. Adult Super Africans display a mix of grey and tan plumage, while the chicks are characterized by grey and yellow coloring at birth. This breed is hardy in all climates and is classified as a ‘Heavy’ breed by the American Poultry Association (APA). They demonstrate good mothering abilities but are less efficient in weeding tasks.
In summary, the Super African Goslings from Valley Hatchery offer a unique combination of historical significance, impressive size, and utility. They are an excellent addition to any farm looking for a strong, vocal, and protective breed, and their distinctive appearance adds an aesthetic appeal to their practical value.
