Description
Valley Hatchery proudly offers the distinguished Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam Chickens, a rare and exotic breed that traces its origins back to 19th century Cuba. Influenced by Oriental breeds and believed to have roots in the Philippine Islands, the Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam boasts a unique combination of aesthetic charm and resilience. Although not yet recognized by the American Standard of Perfection, these miniature versions of the standard Cubalaya are gaining popularity among poultry enthusiasts.
Characterized by their pea combs, short beaks, and broad heads, these chickens exude an air of elegance with their well-spread, low-carried tails. Remarkably, the roosters in this breed seldom develop spurs, often presenting only a nub if any. The vibrant carriage and striking appearance of these chickens make them a standout addition to any flock.
The breed’s adaptation to warmer climates is evident in their hard feathering, making them exceptionally heat-tolerant. The hens display a strong maternal instinct, often becoming broody, and excel as caring mothers. However, their protective nature can manifest as aggression, suggesting they may be better suited to single-breed flocks rather than mixed ones.
Recognized officially in the United States in 1939, the Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam was named “Cubalaya” by the American Poultry Association in homage to its Cuban heritage. This breed made its American debut the same year at the International Poultry Show in Cleveland, Ohio, marking a significant milestone in its history.
The breed’s aesthetic appeal is heightened by its distinctive coloration. The Wheaten Cubalayas feature a dark “cinnamon” shade of wheaten, which gracefully lightens with age. The roosters boast a more radiant plumage, displaying a reddish-orange and emerald sheen, while the hens, typically cinnamon-colored, have lighter cinnamon-wheaten bodies and darker heads and necks. Although not as vivid as the roosters, the hens’ tail feathers add a striking pop of color. Both genders tend to lighten in color as they mature, adding to their visual allure.
Valley Hatchery’s Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam Chickens are not just poultry; they are a symbol of history, beauty, and resilience. Ideal for those seeking a unique and robust breed, they promise to be a fascinating addition to any flock.
