Description
Valley Hatchery’s Blue Runner Ducklings offer a rich blend of historical significance and modern appeal. Originating from Southeast Asia, their lineage is evident in ancient Java stone carvings over 2,000 years old. Traditionally used in rice fields for pest control and egg production, these ducks are known for their impressive mobility and endurance.
The Blue Runner, a standout in the Runner family, boasts a deep charcoal grey color, making it a visually appealing choice. Unlike traditional ducks, they have an upright stance and a distinctive fast walk, allowing them to cover large areas efficiently. This agility makes them excellent foragers, adept at controlling insects and pests in gardens without damaging vegetation.
Weighing between 3.25-4 lbs, they are a light breed, hardy across climates, and mature in 20-24 weeks. Despite their energetic and somewhat nervous personality, they make good pets. These ducks lay about 100-180 eggs per year, ranging from white to bluish-green in color. Although their mothering abilities are modest, their foraging skills are very good, adding to their utility.
Importantly, the breed’s name, “Indian Runner,” originates from their introduction to England in the 1850s, mistakenly thought to have come from India. However, their Southeast Asian origins were later recognized.
Valley Hatchery ensures all ducklings are blue, following typical blue genetics, but offspring may vary in color. As part of the Livestock Conservancy’s “Recovering” status, Blue Runner Ducks are not just an addition to your flock but a contribution to the preservation of a unique breed.
