Description

Valley Hatchery proudly offers the Roman Tufted Goslings, an ancient and distinguished breed originating from Italy, known for its unique history and characteristics. These geese, classified as a light breed for show purposes, have a notable place in history. They are renowned for their role in saving the Capitol at Rome during a siege by the Gauls in the fourth century BC. Unlike the dogs that slept, the vigilant geese honked and alerted Marcus Manlius to the intruders, showcasing their alertness and bravery. The Roman Tufted variety, particularly beloved in North America, stands out among Roman geese, most of which do not possess a tuft. This breed’s tuft is distinct from the crest seen in ducks; it’s formed by an upright group of feathers, giving an appearance of a small helmet on the head. The 1982 British Standard aptly described them as “active, alert, docile rather than defiant.” This aligns with their generally friendly nature, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a calm and sociable bird. They are smaller, plump birds, known for their quiet temperament and effectiveness as protectors. Developed over two thousand years ago in Rome, the Roman Tufted Goose is not just historically significant but also practical. They offer a good meat-to-bone ratio, ideal for family dining. Their distinctive appearance, being rare solid white geese with white head crests, adds to their appeal. Juveniles may exhibit black or gray, but they mature into a fully feathered white adult plumage by 21 weeks of age. Roman Tufted Goslings are excellent for egg production, weeding, and guarding, making them a versatile addition to any farm. They have a friendly and calm personality, suitable as pets, and typically weigh between 11.5 to 14 pounds. The adults are predominantly white, while the chicks are yellow at birth. Hardy in all climates, these geese are classified as a light breed by the American Poultry Association (APA) and lay about 20-30 white eggs annually. They demonstrate good mothering skills and are efficient in weeding. The breed is currently listed as ‘Critical’ by the Livestock Conservancy. By choosing Roman Tufted Goslings from Valley Hatchery, you’re not just adding a bird to your farm; you’re bringing a piece of living history with excellent utility and a friendly, gentle nature. Their origin in Italy adds an element of ancient heritage to these remarkable birds.
