Description
Valley Hatchery proudly presents Buff Ducklings, a heritage breed with a rich history dating back to the early 1900s in Kent, England, developed by the William Cook family. These ducks were meticulously bred for their multipurpose qualities, excelling in egg production and roasting, thanks to their size and easily pluckable buff-colored feathers.
Originating from a blend of breeds, including Runners, Aylesburys, Rouens, and Cayugas, Buff Ducks entered the United States in 1908. Notably, they hold a unique distinction in the American Standard of Perfection as the only poultry breed recognized solely by their color, while “Orpington” should have been used to describe the breed, a testament to their enduring beauty and popularity.
Distinguished by their appearance, female Buff Ducks sport a uniform buff plumage, while males boast a buff body and a striking seal brown head. The females feature a brownish-orange bill with a dark bean, while the males have a yellow bill. Their brown eyes with a blue pupil and orange-yellow shanks and feet enhance their charm.
With a calm disposition and excellent foraging abilities, Buff Ducks make a delightful addition to any flock. They typically weigh between 5 to 6.25 lbs and impress with their egg-laying prowess, producing 130-180 large white or tinted eggs per year, each weighing 80-90 grams.
If you desire purebred ducklings from your Buff Ducks, consider separating them by breed during the mating season or let them cross to discover the fascinating array of shapes and colors in their offspring. Choose Buff Ducklings from Valley Hatchery, a breed that combines historical significance with practical utility and enduring beauty.
