Description

Valley Hatchery is delighted to present the Large Dewlap Toulouse Goslings, a breed with a unique blend of history, characteristics, and utility. Developed in the 1850s in England from the common Toulouse goose, primarily for exhibition, these birds are distinguished by their large dewlap hanging beneath the beak, a deep keel extending from their breast, and a full, double-lobed paunch. Notably, they continue to grow for several years, reaching their peak development at around three years of age. These geese are recognized for their exceptionally calm nature. Fertility can occasionally be a challenge, but fertile eggs from this breed hatch as successfully as those from other goose breeds. Exhibitors of the Large Dewlap Toulouse aim for maximum weight, but during the breeding season, it’s vital to maintain the birds’ fitness and avoid excessive weight gain for optimal fertility and egg production. Originally bred in Toulouse, France, the Large Dewlap Toulouse is a heavyweight breed known for its gourmet meat. They exhibit a gentle and quiet personality, thriving best when not housed with noisier goose breeds. Their plumage is a beautiful gray, accented by a distinctive, fleshy dewlap that increases in size as the bird ages. The bill, legs, and feet are a vibrant orange. This breed is fairly hardy in all climates and is classified as a ‘Heavy’ breed by the American Poultry Association (APA). On average, these geese lay about 20-35 white eggs per year. For optimal fertility, it’s important to allow them to free-range and maintain a healthy weight. The Large Dewlap Toulouse Goslings from Valley Hatchery offer more than just a bird for your farm; they bring a piece of living history with their serene demeanor and utility. These geese are well-suited as pets due to their friendly and calm personality. They typically weigh between 18-25 pounds and have an adult plumage of grey and tan, with chicks displaying grey and yellow colors at birth. Despite their below-average weeding efficiency, their fair mothering abilities and the fact that they’re on the ‘Watch’ list of the Livestock Conservancy reflect their special status in the world of poultry. With their origin deeply rooted in France, these geese are a testament to the rich heritage and utility of the breed.
